WHISKY MAGAZINE AWARDS SCOTLAND

07th December 2018
Another year of innovation sees Scotland celebrated in Whisky Magazine Awards Scotland

[Edinburgh – 7 December] Whisky Magazine presented the Scottish winners of its Whisky Magazine Awards 2019, at Edinburgh’s Surgeons’ Hall. The awards presented on the day included the Icons of Whisky Scotland 2019, Independent Bottlers Challenge and Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame.

Edrington Group were the big winners on the day, taking home the title of Distiller of the Year, sponsored by Glencairn Crystal, while its new Macallan Distillery also won Visitor Attraction of the Year category, sponsored by Christie’s.

William Grant & Sons also took home titles, including Brand Innovator of the Year, sponsored by Multi Packaging Solutions, for Glenfiddich and Mark Thomson, brand ambassador for Glenfiddich, retaining his title in Scotland as Scotch Whisky Brand Ambassador of the Year.

Winners from the Scottish awards will now go head-to-head with those from the other regions celebrated in the Icons of Whisky Awards; America, Australia, India, Ireland and Rest of World. The global finale takes place in London on 29th March 2019.

The event concluded with the induction of two new members into Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame, sponsored by Top Series by Amorim. The first inductee on the day was master blender Rachel Barrie, currently of Brown-Forman, before whisky consultant Ken Grier was also made a member of the prestigious Hall of Fame.

Rob Allanson, editor of Whisky Magazine, says, “The Scotch whisky category continues to innovate and grow, with our Icons of Whisky Awards a testament to the people and places that make it so special. This year’s Icons of Whisky Awards Scotland have been hotly contested, as standards and expectations continue to rise, so congratulations to all of those nominated in the awards and indeed, our winners.”

On the Hall of Fame inductees, Allanson says, “Our Hall of Fame is about recognising those who have made a lasting contribution on the whisky industry. I can proudly say that today’s inductees both fully warrant that description, whether in the spirits Rachel has helped to create, or the boundaries that Ken has helped knock down. The Scotch industry is in a stronger place due to their hard work and dedication and I look forward to seeing where they take us next.”

The Icons of Whisky awards now move across the Atlantic to America in January, before the global finale in London, March 2019. Tickets can be purchased for the Whisky Magazine Awards London 2019 now, https://wmal2019.eventbrite.co.uk
