The winners of this year’s Independent Bottlers Challenge were announced in Edinburgh on 6 December at the annual Whisky Magazine Scotland Lunch.

This competition just keeps getting better and better in terms of some of the bottlings that are available to consumers. We have always said that the independents offer a distillery fan another window, a different view into their favourite distillery. All of these bottles, simply because they are more often than not single cask or limited-edition bottlings, give whisky lovers a new take on their go to whiskies, where the ‘house’ whisky might be rare or now non-existent. Of course, an independent bottling might also show a closer link to the ‘terroir’ the liquid comes from, but you can certainly expect them to be unexpected. The independent sector is growing steadily and has, in the 14 years we have been doing this competition, expanded beyond its original Scottish base.
